Auch im neuen Jahr stellt Garmin seinen Trainingscomputern der Edge Serie neue Updates zur Verfügung. Die gesamte Garmin Edge Serie (1030, 820, 520plus) bekommt einen Beta  Zugang zum Galileo Satelliten. Außerdem werden für alle Geräte die Smart Notifications erweitert. 

Seit Jahresbeginn ist die weltweite Nutzung des europäischen Satellitensystems Galileo möglich, nach GPS (USA) und GLONASS (Russland) soll die Genauigkeit der Navigation mit Galileo noch präziser sein. Inwiefern sich diese auf unsere Outdoor Aktivitäten auswirkt, bleibt aber abzuwarten.

Garmin handelt in jedem Fall sehr schnell und bietet für Garmin Edge 1030 (Software Version 7.00), Garmin Edge 820 (Software Version 11.0) und Garmin Edge 520plus (Software Version 4.0) bereits eine Beta Version des neuen Satellitensystems. Dazu müsst ihr aber neben dem Software Update auch ein GPS-Firmware Update durchführen, dazu weiter unten mehr.

Außerdem bekommen alle o.g. Geräte Auf Wunsch auch neue Smart Notifications. Neben Anrufen und SMS sollen auch Tweets, Whats App und Facebook Nachrichten an den Garmin Edge gesendet werden.

Im Folgenden eine Auflistung aller aktuellen Software Upfates aus der Garmin Edge Serie.

Firmware Update nicht vergessen

Ich bin kein Freund von Garmin Express, der PC/Mac Schnittstelle zu den Edge Geräten. Aber leider kommt ihr um die Benutzung des Programms nicht herum, wenn ihr das neue Satelliten System Galileo testen wollt.

Neben dem Aufspielen des Software Update des Garmin Edge 1030 820 oder 520plus, dass ihr wie gewohnt über WLAN Zugriff des Geräts installieren könnt, müsst ihr für das GPS Firmware unumgänglich den Garmin Edge mit eurem Computer verbinden.

Dafür ist auf dem PC/Mac die Software Garmin Express notwendig. Nach der Installation könnt ihr den Garmin per USB Kabel mit eurem System verbinden und danach folgt ihr den Anweisungen im Garmin Express Programm.

Vorsicht: In der Vergangenheit führte die Nutzung von Garmin Express im Zusammenhang mit Updates bei ein Bekannter und mir häufig zu Problemen.

Software Update vom 08.01.2019

Neben dem Zugang zum neuen Galileo System und Smart Notifications  gibt es es eine ganze Liste an Verbesserungen in diesem Update.

U.a. sind endlich die Powermeter und Kadenz Dropouts behoben, kurzzeitig waren immer mal wieder beide Daten weg vom Display. Auch kleinere Steigungen sollen jetzt besser vom System verarbeitet werden,

Changes made from version 6.30 to 7.00:

  • New Beta Feature: Galileo satellites. There is now support to use the Galileo network of satellites to assist in getting GPS fixes. With the correct GPS firmware, this option can be enabled by selecting GPS+Galileo in the GPS setting. Sync the device with Garmin Express to make sure that the new line of GPS firmware is provided to the device. Without this, the option will not be available.
  • Added cycling dynamics support for 3rd party power sensors.
  • Updated smart notification categories. In the phone settings, social and other smart notification categories can be enabled. This will make the Edge show notifications from other applications depending on how they are categorized by Garmin Connect Mobile. Apps like WhatsApp, GroupMe, and Twitter may show up under social and things like e-mail, calendar, and news may show up under other. These categories are off by default and must be enabled to be seen.
  • Fixed an issue causing cadence and power data dropouts.
  • Fixed the activity profile routing mode getting reset to Road Cycling mode.
  • Added prompt to indicate when a course has more course points than are supported by the device.
  • Improved Shimano STEPS response time.
  • Fixed lens mode VIRB setting.
  • Fixed issue with transmitting front and rear gear information to the Varia Vision.

Garmin Edge 820 Software Update 11.00

Software Update vom 09.01.2019

Der Garmin Edge 820 liegt zwischen dem 520 Plus und 1030 als willkommene Alternative für Fahrer, die ein leichtes Gerät für den Wettkampf suchen aber trotzdem nicht auf die Routing und Kartendarstellung verzichten möchten.

Das Software Update 11.00 für den Garmin Edge 820 bietet wie auch für den großen Bruder Zugang zum Galileo Satellitensystem und neue Smart Notifications. Darüberhinaus ist die Liste der Verbesserung in diesem Update auch für den Garmin Edge 20 besonders lang. Ein verspätetes Weihnachtsgeschenk 🙂

  • New Beta Feature: Galileo satellites. There is now support to use the Galileo network of satellites to assist in getting GPS fixes. With the correct GPS firmware, this option can be enabled by selecting GPS+Galileo in the GPS setting. Sync the device with Garmin Express to make sure that the new line of GPS firmware is provided to the device. Without this, the option will not be available.
  • Added cycling dynamics support for 3rd party power sensors.
  • Updated smart notification categories. In the phone settings, social and other smart notification categories can be enabled. This will make the Edge show notifications from other applications depending on how they are categorized by Garmin Connect Mobile.   • New Feature: Physio TrueUp for Biometrics. If enabled, recovery time and cycling VO2Max will sync between Garmin devices that support TrueUp. This requires enabling the feature in Garmin Connect Mobile or in Garmin Connect web. To view the current enabled state, a new My Stats Options page is available under Menu > My Stats > Options. Also note that the device will not currently display activities from other devices, even if the help text from other services say so.
  • Added enhanced support for Varia RTL510 radar tail light. As part of this, all ANT sensor processing code has been improved and should be more reliable.
  • Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and Lactate Threshold Heart Rate (LTHR) values should be more accurate and in line with other devices now.
  • Fixed crash that could occur when switching activity profiles in the middle of a ride.
  • Updated the manual activity upload UI. It will no longer be available if the auto upload setting in GCM is disabled, as this prevents GCM from accepting our upload. If auto upload is enabled, it should correctly reflect success when the upload completes.
  • Fixed issue where the Edge would no longer connect to old iOS devices after version 9.00’s Bluetooth rework.
  • Added UI to inform users of the impact of brightness and backlight settings on battery life.
  • Added tip to remind users to remove their bluetooth connection from the phone’s settings after performing a forget phone action.
  • Fixed issue with the device where going into mass storage from a power off state may cause Garmin Express to offer a map update that the device does not need.
  • Fixed issue where going into mass storage mode would sometimes be detected as an unrecognized device until unplugging the unit and trying again.

Garmin Edge 520 Plus Software Update 4.0

Die Liste der Verbesserungen für den Garmin Edge 520plus ist etwas kürzer als bei den älteren Modellen 820 und 1030, aber mit dem Zugang zum Galileo Satellitensystem und den neuen Smart Notifications gibt es auch für den 520plus die neuen Features.

Die Höhenmeter bei kleinen Anstiegen werden mit der Software 4.00 besser berechnet, genauso wie zahlreiche Verbesserungen für die FTP bezogenen Leistungsdaten.
